Mediation
The mediation process offers parties a viable alternative to traditional litigation, which often pits spouses against each other in the courtroom. The litigation process can leave parties emotionally and financially drained, feeling powerless and out of control.
In mediation, the divorcing couple can negotiate the terms of their divorce in a non-adversarial environment. As an experienced Mediator, Attorney Bonn
will guide both parties as a neutral and objective facilitator. The spouses maintain control over the terms of the divorce and exchange ideas and concerns in a safe, focused setting. Once the parties have agreed on the structure of an agreement, Attorney Bonn will draft the documents to enable the parties to file an uncontested divorce.
Parent Coordinator
A Parent Coordinator is an impartial third party chosen by the parties and/or the court to assist parents in resolving child-related disagreements outside of court. The process can be similar to mediation, where the Parent Coordinator works with the parties to reach a mutually agreeable resolution of issues such as visitation schedules, pick up and drop off procedures, selection of extra-curricular activities and other child specific concerns. However, if a good faith effort to reach an agreement is unsuccessful the Parent Coordinator is given the authority to make a binding recommendation until the decision is ultimately reviewed by the court. Attorney Bonn‘s colleagues in the legal community, lawyers and judges, routinely refer their clients to her as a successful and trusted Parent Coordinator.
Guardian Ad Litem
Attorney Bonn is routinely appointed by the judges of the various Massachusetts Probate and Family Courts to serve as Guardian ad Litem. In her role as “GAL” Attorney Bonn conducts an investigation and reports to the courts on issues affecting child custody and parenting time. A Guardian ad Litem is generally used a tool to assist a judge in high-conflict cases.
Modifications
After a divorce or paternity judgment situations may arise that require a change to an agreement or court order. Whenever there is a material change of circumstance, financial or child-related, a modification may be necessary.
Contempts
Whenever there is a failure to abide by a court-approved agreement or judgment it may be necessary to file a contempt to enforce the terms. Many contempts address the failure to pay child support, alimony or other financial obligations. The Law Office of Attorney Karen I. Bonn is experienced in both prosecuting and defending contempt actions.
Restraining Orders
Massachusetts has specific laws and procedures to protect adults and children from physical abuse and harassment. Whether a client is a victim of abuse or accused of abusing his or her spouse, partner or child, Attorney Bonn's experienced and knowledge will assist the client in navigating the court process.
